Love is in the air! This week, MahMuse are going to cast our eyes to seven key X-Men relationships, proving that the course of true love does not run well in the mutant world. First up – Psylocke and Archangel!
When did Psylocke and Archangel get together?
‘X-Men #29’ was their first date, with Psylocke and Archangel going on a date to the Hellfire Club that included a confrontation with Shinobi Shaw. It kind of set the standard for their relationship, really, which often involved a lot of darkness. They got serious a couple of issues later, in ‘X-Men #32’. The years passed, they broke up, but got together again while on Utopia.
What did Psylocke and Archangel have in common?
Actually, this relationship was a pretty logical one. Both Psylocke and Archangel were born to riches, even hereditary members of the Hellfire Club. Both are comfortable with darkness, both have a side that is willing to – even hungry to – kill, and both are passionate in their relationships.
What word best sums up Psylocke and Archangel’s relationship?
Are Psylocke and Archangel still together?
No. As members of X-Force, Psylocke and Archangel were going head-first into some of the darkest X-places imaginable. It carried a cost, with Archangel’s Death persona becoming increasingly powerful; Psylocke used all her powers to try to restrain it. Unfortunately, she hadn’t factored in the Shadow King’s meddling, and the result was Archangel claiming his legacy as Apocalypse’s heir.
Although Psylocke was briefly designed as Archangel’s death, she rebelled against him, stabbing him with a Life Seed. The result was to kill Archangel, who was reborn as a blank slate. The two have rarely interacted since, with Archangel having no memory of their past, and Psylocke finding the whole thing too painful.
My thoughts on Psylocke and Archangel:
In one sense, Psylocke and Archangel are the strangest couple imaginable; the seriously sexy Psylocke had, at the time they got together, just finished her (aggressive) flirtation with Cyclops, and even flirted with Sabretooth! For all the relationship seemed to be an odd one, the two found comfort in one another, and became quite a natural fit for one another.
‘The Dark Angel Saga‘, though, casts a deep shadow over their entire relationship; Psylocke knew the danger Archangel posed, and chose to sacrifice her lover for the sake of the world, killing him. It was an epic ending, bringing to fulfilment an arc that had rumbled on in the background for decades.
