Psylocke and Archangel: a Tragic Romance

Love is in the air!  This week, MahMuse are going to cast our eyes to seven key X-Men relationships, proving that the course of true love does not run well in the mutant world.  First up – Psylocke and Archangel!

When did Psylocke and Archangel get together?

X-Men #29’ was their first date, with Psylocke and Archangel going on a date to the Hellfire Club that included a confrontation with Shinobi Shaw.  It kind of set the standard for their relationship, really, which often involved a lot of darkness.  They got serious a couple of issues later, in ‘X-Men #32’.  The years passed, they broke up, but got together again while on Utopia.

They do make a wonderfully aristocratic couple!

What did Psylocke and Archangel have in common?

Actually, this relationship was a pretty logical one.  Both Psylocke and Archangel were born to riches, even hereditary members of the Hellfire Club.  Both are comfortable with darkness, both have a side that is willing to – even hungry to – kill, and both are passionate in their relationships.

What word best sums up Psylocke and Archangel’s relationship?

Are Psylocke and Archangel still together?

No.  As members of X-Force, Psylocke and Archangel were going head-first into some of the darkest X-places imaginable.  It carried a cost, with Archangel’s Death persona becoming increasingly powerful; Psylocke used all her powers to try to restrain it.  Unfortunately, she hadn’t factored in the Shadow King’s meddling, and the result was Archangel claiming his legacy as Apocalypse’s heir.

Psylocke and Archangel's Death persona
Psylocke did everything in her power to keep the Death persona down, but it proved far too dangerous.

Although Psylocke was briefly designed as Archangel’s death, she rebelled against him, stabbing him with a Life Seed.  The result was to kill Archangel, who was reborn as a blank slate.  The two have rarely interacted since, with Archangel having no memory of their past, and Psylocke finding the whole thing too painful.

My thoughts on Psylocke and Archangel:

In one sense, Psylocke and Archangel are the strangest couple imaginable; the seriously sexy Psylocke had, at the time they got together, just finished her (aggressive) flirtation with Cyclops, and even flirted with Sabretooth!  For all the relationship seemed to be an odd one, the two found comfort in one another, and became quite a natural fit for one another.

This Fleer trading card image kind of sums up Psylocke’s attitude towards men back when they got together perfectly…

The Dark Angel Saga‘, though, casts a deep shadow over their entire relationship; Psylocke knew the danger Archangel posed, and chose to sacrifice her lover for the sake of the world, killing him.  It was an epic ending, bringing to fulfilment an arc that had rumbled on in the background for decades.

When did the Sabretooth flirtation happen? This doesn’t seem like Betsy at all given their past. Was this an Externals thing with the AOA Sabretooth? That I could understand.

I think them getting together made quite a lot of sense at the time. Both had been through intense, physical transformations and it would seem natural for them to bond over that i think

She flirted with sabretooth when he was staying in the mansion and seemingly trying to go the route Logan went and control his feral side. They trained together in the danger room and it got heated at times, considering their history it was an interesting pairing. I always think of archangel and psylocke’s relationship during this time, because when Creed turned and almost gutted psylocke and left the mansion, Warren went after him with the other xmen. Sabretooth has a way of saving his best for when it matters, and he may lose meaningless fights or take off, he left warren in as bad of shape as he did psylocke and I think he may have ripped off one of his wings even?? Pretty sure its what started him back to just being angel though.
