Storm and Forge: A Doomed Romance

Moving on through the X-Men’s love-lives, today I want to cast my eye to an ill-fated couple – Storm and Forge!

WHEN DID STORM AND FORGE GET TOGETHER?

It all began in the classic Claremont era, with ‘Uncanny X-Men #185’.  Forge, a mutant genius who has the power to invent stuff, had built a power-neutralising gun on behalf of the US Government.  To his horror, the beautiful and powerful Storm was struck by the gunshot, and rendered powerless!

See if I Care
Storm was listless and depressed without her powers; but for all his protests, Forge *did* care.

Forge took her in, and their deep attraction grew.  Unfortunately, Storm learned of Forge’s responsibility for the weapon, and she left him; the two would later reconcile, after Storm’s powers returned.

WHAT DID STORM AND FORGE HAVE IN COMMON?

Although very different, both Storm and Forge are passionate and spiritual people.  The two were an unusual couple, but really rather sweet.

WHAT WORD BEST SUMS UP STORM AND FORGE’S RELATIONSHIPS?

Disappointing.

ARE STORM AND FORGE STILL TOGETHER?

No.  In ‘Uncanny X-Men #289’, Forge proposed to Storm; however, he believed she would refuse him, and retracted the proposal.  Heartbreakingly, Storm was actually intending to say yes, and was left devastated.

Would have said yes
This moment had a profound impact on me as a teenager, as I saw even Storm could crack over love deferred.

It’s been clear that Forge is nowhere near over Storm, though; he stayed away from her wedding to the Black Panther, and was successfully blackmailed when Nimrod threatened to attack the wedding.  The current ‘Storm’ run has frequently featured glimpses of Forge, who has made it quite clear how much he still cares for Storm.

MY THOUGHTS ON STORM AND FORGE:

To me, this was the couple who should have been.  Rather than marry the Black Panther (let’s face it, wedding their two most famous black-skinned characters was rather gimmicky), Storm is a far better match for Forge, and the outcome of their relationship – Forge’s retracting his proposal – is an issue memorable for its sadness.
