Madrox and Layla Miller: True Love

Happy Valentine’s Day!  Today, in honour of Valentine’s Day, we’re looking at a classic X-Men romance – Jamie Madrox and Layla Miller!

WHEN DID MADROX AND LAYLA GET TOGETHER?

Some couples are just meant to be.  One of the reasons is that they’re written by one of the best writers in the business – and Madrox and Layla are just one of those couples, written by none other than the awesome Peter David.

When Madrox and Layla first met, Layla was just a child, one whose power appeared to be the weird ability to ‘know stuff’.  Well, during X-Factor’s ‘Civil War’ arc, Madrox’s X-Factor stuck their finger up to the man, refusing to back the Super-Human Registration Act.  The result was that they all got drunk, and Madrox unwittingly created a dupe.  Said dupe slept with both Monet and Siryn, leading to some fun bickering in the team.  Having just realised what was coming – and been given a morning snog by both the girls! – Madrox wandered down the stairs and bumped into Layla.  Suddenly scared, he asked her if he’d slept with her too.  Her response?

Layla and Madrox's wedding night foretold
Young Layla just loved freaking Jamie out!

This was left as a left-field, laughably funny twist; and then, time-travel intervened.  Layla travelled to the future, where she aged (see the ‘X-Factor: Layla Miller’ miniseries).  Ultimately, she travelled back, and Madrox and Layla met again.  The sparks were instant, and the outcome was never in doubt, as ‘X-Factor #43‘ proved.

WHAT DO MADROX AND LAYLA HAVE IN COMMON?

The wackiness of their lives, and a deep attraction to one another.  Realistically, this is a couple who simply oozes love.

WHAT WORD BEST SUMS UP MADROX AND LAYLA?

Fun.

ARE MADROX AND LAYLA STILL TOGETHER?

Yes!  The two have married, and retired from super-heroics, heading out to live on a farm together.  Last mention was that Madrox played a clever game, selling the rights to the X-Factor name in order to get them settled down financially.

Only in a Peter David book would this kind of dialogue make sense!

MY THOUGHTS ON MADROX AND LAYLA

There are very few X-couples who are a delight to read, but Madrox and Layla are one of them.  I admit that I was more of a fan of younger Layla, but seeing the hints come to fulfilment was delightful.  It’s a refreshing change to see an X-couple work out.

Right? It really is nice to see an X-couple work out.

  2. But, the sadness is that they only “work out” off canvas. If the characters are refolded into any X-storylines, the temptation is there for the writer to tear them apart. Bittersweet at best.
