Henry Cavill Promises Superman’s Next Film Will Inspire Fans

  • Share

Man of Steel star Henry Cavill outlined his hopes that Superman will be a more inspiring presence in the DC Universe after making his long-awaited return in Black Adam.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Cavill explained his ideal scenario for the future of the flagship character and the role Superman could play in the DCU. “There is so much in the way of conversations to be had,” he said. “Obviously, I have a very close connection to the character. And there is something extraordinarily special about him; extraordinarily special about his capacity to give and to love. I don’t mean romantically; I mean his love for Earth and for the people who live here, and to make people feel powerful — to make people feel like Superman themselves.”

Immediate plans for future Superman appearances are unclear, though Justice League and Man of Steel director Zack Snyder has made clear his excitement at the prospect of working with the actor again. Cavill went on to clarify his personal aims for the character moving forward. “I have plenty of desires for this, of course, which will be discussed more in time,” Cavill said. “But the most important thing, which I will be aiming for, is for the audience to leave the cinema and to feel like they can fly, to feel like they can protect, and to feel like they want to give to everyone else. That would be my goal.”

A New Dawn For the DC Universe

With Dwayne Johnson in the titular role and a cameo from Cavill’s Superman in a post-credits scene, the release of Black Adam was a successful one for DC Films and Warner Bros. The film blew past the total set by 2019’s Shazam! at its opening weekend box office, earning a domestic gross of $67 million with an additional $73 million across 76 markets internationally. Since then Black Adam has gone from strength to strength, crossing the $250 million threshold in its second week in theaters.

These comments echo comments made by Cavill in a recent interview, where he explained that he was excited to portray an “enormously joyful” version of Superman in future projects. Cavill officially announced his return as Superman in October following his cameo in Black Adam. While it is currently unknown in what capacity he will return, Johnson has elaborated on how he sees a future fight between Black Adam and the Man of Steel playing out.

“I will say, as you guys know, we’re all in deep in this mythology, and it’s been the age-old question of who would win in a fight between Black Adam or Superman? Pound for pound, they’re pretty close,” he said. “I guess it probably all depends on who’s playing Superman.”

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam is now in theaters.
