The Little Mermaid star Halle Bailey’s Avatar-inspired Halloween costume received the official seal of approval from the official social media for James Cameron’s record-breaking film franchise.

Bailey, who will star as Ariel in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of the 1989 animated film, shared a series of photos on Twitter showcasing her Halloween costume, which showed her and her boyfriend, rapper DDG, dressed as the Na’vi from 2009’s Avatar. “[I] always wanted to be an avatar,” Bailey tweeted. “[H]appy halloween.” In response to Bailey’s tweet, Avatar‘s official Twitter shared its approval of the couple’s costumes. “[W]e’re happy to have you as part of our world,” the tweet read.

Despite releasing over 10 years ago, Cameron’s Avatar still holds the title of the highest-grossing film of all time, with its lifetime global box-office total close to $3 billion. The film’s highly-anticipated and long-delayed sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, is the first in as many as four planned Avatar sequels currently in development. Cameron explained recently that the reason why he wants to make so many Avatar films is due to his desire to continue working with the film’s “amazing” cast and crew, which he described as a “family.”

Bailey Heads Underwater in The Little Mermaid

Should Bailey eventually join this family, it would be the second major underwater-set film the actor and musician would be a part of. In 2019, Bailey was announced as the lead in 2023’s The Little Mermaid. The film is part of the Walt Disney Company’s ongoing trend of remaking animated films from past decades into live-action. While many of Disney’s remakes have recieved a variety of criticisms over the years, The Little Mermaid has been the target of particular vitriol online due to the casting of Bailey, who is Black, as the traditionally white Ariel. Following the release of the film’s teaser trailer in September, countless racially-charged comments directed at Bailey were posted.

Despite the negative backlash for a film that has yet to release, one person who has lent her support to the new Ariel is the actor who originally voiced the Disney princess. Jodi Benson, who voiced the character in the original animated film, sang Bailey’s praises following the teaser trailer’s release. “Halle, you were absolutely amazing,” Benson wrote at the time. “I’m SO proud of you and your beautiful performance as Ariel!” Benson is not the only mermaid defending the remake’s lead, as Splash actor Daryl Hannah also criticized the racist criticisms directed at Bailey.

Avatar: The Way of Water hits theaters on Dec. 16, while the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid opens on May 26, 2023.
