Endgame’s Success Will Never Be Replicated, Says Director Joe Russo

Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo stated that the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie’s success will never be repeated.

While speaking to Variety with his older brother and co-director Anthony, both brothers were asked if any other film could either equal or surpass Endgame, which earned $1.2 billion during its opening weekend. “It will never happen again,” Joe Russo replied. “That was an apex of that era of theatrical filmmaking. When we started [our studio] AGBO, we already felt the winds shifting.” Anthony Russo himself also commented on Endgame‘s success back in 2019, describing it as “a very hard idea to process.”

Following the movie’s release, Anthony said he was almost disappointed by Endgame doing so well financially. According to the filmmaker, he felt that its box office victory wasn’t the most interesting part of the story, with Joe adding, “It’s always about the narrative, too, of these movies in the marketplace. How did it do? Did it break a record? Did it beat the last one? That stuff is really critical to the life of a movie. And of course, we were hoping that it was going to break the international record. Because that’s a story, right?”

Regarding a potential return to the MCU, the Russos revealed that they had an interest in tackling Secret Wars, a series the brothers were fans of in their youth, though Joe acknowledged that it wouldn’t be an easy feat. “[Secret Wars is] incredibly ambitious — it would be bigger than Infinity War and Endgame — it’s a massive undertaking and those two movies were really very hard to make,” he said. “So trying to imagine making another two movies even bigger than those two, we’re gonna have to sleep on it.”

As for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes themselves, the Avengers will return to the silver screen with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Both movies will hit theaters on May 2, 2025 and May 1, 2026, respectively, with the former being helmed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director and co-writer Destin Daniel Cretton. However, a subsequent report claims that Cretton will not be the director for Secret Wars, with Marvel Studios supposedly planning to have a different filmmaker helm the project.

Avengers: Endgame is streaming on Disney+.
