Tuca & Bertie has been canceled for the second time.

Series creator Lisa Hanawalt announced the cancellation on Twitter. “Goodbye to Tuca & Bertie, for now,” she wrote. Hanawalt thanked the fans of the show and Adult Swim, saying she was proud of the work done by her crew and collaborators, as well as the fact that they were covered by both the Animation Guild and the Writer’s Guild of America. “I still have a beautiful and weird ending to T&B in mind, hopefully someday we’ll get the chance to finish this story,” Hanawalt explained. “In the meantime, I’m not done creating. I’ve witnessed so many people connecting with this show on a profound level, and I intend to keep telling stories like this, no matter what.”

Executive producer Raphael Bob-Waksberg — the creator of BoJack Horseman — mourned the series as well, writing, “Tremendously proud I got to work on this wonderful show.” He also shared a section of the script he wrote for the Season 3 episode “The One Where Bertie Gets Eaten By a Snake.” Storyboard artist McKenzie Bugg similarly expressed her gratitude for working on the series, adding, “Thank you tuca and bertie for giving me my first foot in the door of animation. when season 1 came out, i was so obsessed and inspired as a young woman that wanted to enter animation, so getting to work on its final season was a dream come true. birdtown 4ever !!”

Tuca & Bertie Reaches Its End (for Now) After Three Seasons

Originally premiering on Netflix in 2019, Tuca & Bertie is a surreal slice-of-life comedy following best friends Tuca Toucan (Tiffany Haddish) and Bertie Songthrush (Ali Wong) as they attempt to navigate adulthood in the strange city of Birdtown alongside Bertie’s boyfriend, Speckle (Steven Yeun). The show has been praised for its cast, sense of humor and mature approach to interpersonal relationships. However, Netflix canceled Tuca & Bertie after its first season. Adult Swim subsequently picked the show up, airing another two seasons before its second cancellation.

Tuca & Bertie‘s cancellation at Adult Swim comes hot on the heels of Warner Bros. Discovery’s purging of original content, particularly in regard to animation. Already the company has removed multiple Cartoon Network shows from its platforms, including Infinity Train, Victor and Valentino and Adult Swim’s own Lazor Wulf, Tigtone and Blade Runner: Black Lotus. These decisions have elicited criticisms from fans and professionals alike, decrying Discovery for its unprofessional conduct and seemingly deliberate targeting of programs with diverse casts.

Season 1 of Tuca & Bertie is available to stream on Netflix. Seasons 2 and 3 are available on Adult Swim and HBO Max.
