Henry Cavill announced his exit from Netflix’s The Witcher not too long ago and it caused an uproar among the show’s fanbase. In response, one fan launched a petition calling for the show to bring Cavill back and instead fire the writers.
Launched on Change.org, the petition recently shot past 100,000 signatures a week after being posted. The petition assumed that Cavill left due to creative differences with the show’s executive producers, writers and showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich, whom it states disliked Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, the source material that inspired the show. It’s a sentiment those who have signed the petition appear to share, with many citing the writers room as their reason.
Creative Differences on The Witcher
It should be noted that while there have been criticisms of the creative decisions made throughout the Netflix series, the belief that the writers room were not themselves fans of the source material was galvanized after former writer Beau DeMayo claimed during a Q&A, “I’ve been on show – namely Witcher – where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material).”
Cavill himself has not publicly specified his reasons for leaving the show. However, recent reports suggest it was indeed because he did not agree with The Witcher‘s producers. In fact, the actor is said to have considered leaving the project while Season 2 was in post-production. It’s uncertain if the decision was made then, but it has been suggested the producers looked at potential replacements and selected actor Liam Hemsworth while Season 3 was in production.
Where Does Netflix’s The Witcher Go From Here?
Hemsworth’s casting was announced at the end of October, along with The Witcher Season 4, though this was after news of Seasons 4 and 5’s development had surfaced. Season 3 will mark Cavill’s last appearance as Geralt of Rivia, with Hemsworth taking over in the seasons that follow. Hemsworth himself stated at the time, “As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure.”
It’s currently uncertain how Cavill’s departure will impact the rest of the franchise. Netflix has announced a number of spinoff projects including a new anime titled The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, the prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin; and more.
The Witcher is available for streaming on Netflix. Season 3 is scheduled to premiere in the summer of 2023.
