Production on the fourth and final season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy is underway, according to showrunner Steve Blackman.

Blackman shared an image on his Instagram revealing the cover page of the script for Season 4’s premiere episode, adding the note, “And so it begins… one last time” with heart and umbrella emojis. The page credited Jesse McKeown as writers on the episode and revealed its ironic title: “The Unbearable Tragedy of Getting What You Want.”

The Umbrella Academy, based on the comic series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, debuted on Netflix in 2019 and has become one of the streamer’s core genre series. The show centers on a team of seven siblings by adoption, each of whom has a unique superpower and has been trained since infancy by sour-tempered billionaire Reginald Hargreeves as celebrity heroes. When they reunite as adults, the Umbrella Academy must overcome their interpersonal difficulties and work together to save the world.

Season 2 premiered in July 2020 and saw the team stuck in the 1960s after some unplanned time travel, and in Season 3, released in June 2022, they returned to the present day only to find it changed. The latest season opened at #1 in Netflix’s English-language TV weekly rankings and spent five weeks in the Top 10.

The Hargreeves Return for Season 4

It was announced in August that the fourth season of The Umbrella Academy would be its last. Returning cast members include Elliot Page as Viktor, Tom Hopper as Luther, David Castañeda as Diego, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison, Robert Sheehan as Klaus, Aidan Gallagher as Five, Justin H. Min as Sparrow Ben, Ritu Arya as Lila Pitts and Colm Feore as Reginald Hargreeves.

The Season 3 finale of The Umbrella Academy saw the Hargreeves stepping into yet another timeline, in which they’re without powers and missing a few siblings. The final moments of the episode saw the lead characters choose to go their separate ways, but so far, no plot details have been revealed for Season 4. It is also unknown whether series regulars Adam Godley, Genesis Rodriguez and Britne Oldford will be back for the final season, as the Season 3 finale left their characters’ fates uncertain.

The first three seasons of The Umbrella Academy are currently available to stream on Netflix. Season 4 does not have a release date at this time.
