Disney’s Gargoyles Returns in December From Dynamite
Dynamite Entertainment announced Disney’s Gargoyles would be returning for a new series, which will serve as a new “season” for the Walt Disney Television Animation show that ran from 1994 to 1997, at San Diego Comic-Con. Coming from series creator Greg Weisman, artist and colorist George Kambadais and letterer Jeff Eckleberry, the synopsis for Gargoyles #1 reads, “One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was THE AGE OF GARGOYLES. Stone by day, Warriors by night, they were betrayed by the humans they had sworn to protect…frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and they live again! They are Defenders of the Night! THEY ARE GARGOYLES!”
In a recent interview for CBR, Weisman said the new Gargoyles series is made for both new and returning fans of the franchise. “Nate and I agreed from the beginning that we wanted this series to be an entry point for new fans, as well as a treat for old fans, so we’re reintroducing all concepts from scratch,” he explained. “We didn’t want the first few issues to be solid exposition or flashbacks, so there are certain aspects that we glide over, acknowledging but not explaining, because they aren’t immediately relevant to the story at hand. But given enough issues, we’ll get to everything. And hopefully, there’s enough intriguing content in these first few issues that readers [who are] new to the property will be hooked.”
Weisman further added, “I’ve been gathering ideas for Gargoyles non-stop since 1993. So, yes, some of these were ideas from way back in the day. Some are only, say, a decade or two old. Some are new. It never ends. The Gargoyles Universe has always been rich with potential content.”
Gargoyles #1 features cover art by David Nakayama, Amanda Conner, Lucio Parrillo, Lesley “Leirix” Li, Tony Fleecs and Trish Forster. The issue releases Dec. 7 from Dynamite Entertainment.
