Weird Al Encourages Fans to Pirate His New Movie

Weird Al encouraged fans who can’t stream WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story on The Roku Channel to pirate the film instead.

Following the release of the new parody biopic, a fan asked Al Yankovic how they could view the film in Australia since The Roku Channel, the biopic’s streaming home, is only available to users in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Yankovic revealed that Roku was currently working on a way to bring the film to Australia but not-so-subtly suggested using a VPN.

“In the meantime, there’s VPN (Very Probably No) way to watch it legally,” he tweeted. “I’m sure you have a TORRENT of other questions, but I have to move along, sorry.” While Yankovic explains the VPN acronym as “Very Probably No,” it actually stands for Virtual Private Network. A VPN ensures users’ privacy on the Internet, but also allows people to change their IP address to stream content outside their region.

How to Watch WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story

Audiences can stream WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story at no charge on The Roku Channel. “There clearly aren’t enough biopic movies about famous musicians, and we were excited to shine a light on the incredibly true, unexaggerated story of Weird Al,” Roku Head of Original Scripted Programming Colin Davis said. “This is sincerely the ultimate combination of talent, creativity and friends, coming together to make something genuinely funny, and we could not be prouder to call this film a Roku Original.”

In January 2022, Roku announced Daniel Radcliffe would portray Weird Al in the new biopic. Radcliffe previously gained Yankovic’s attention for his performance of Tom Lehrer’s “The Elements” on The Graham Norton Show. “Wearing the Hawaiian shirt is a huge responsibility that I don’t take lightly, and I’m honored to finally share with the world the absolutely 100 percent unassailably true story of Weird Al’s depraved and scandalous life,” Radcliffe said when his casting was announced.

In addition to Radcliffe, Thirteen‘s Evan Rachel Wood also stars in the film as Madonna. Before Wood’s appearance as the acclaimed pop singer, Weird Al parodied Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” for his song “Like a Surgeon,” released in 1986. The Office‘s Rainn Wilson also joins Radcliffe and Wood as Dr. Demento, a radio broadcaster who jumpstarted Yankovic’s career.
