Are ya ready, kids? The fourth feature film in Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants franchise is officially slated to bow in 2025.
Per Variety, the currently-untitled fourth SpongeBob film is scheduled to premiere on May 23, 2025. The feature comes from Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Animation. This news coincides with the announcement that studios’ first animated film based on Avatar: The Last Airbender is due to premiere on Oct. 10. 2025. Nickelodeon and Paramount are collaborating with Avatar Studios for a trilogy of Avatar films.
Created by the late, great Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants originally premiered on Nickelodeon in 1999 and is still airing to this very day. The animated series is currently in the midst of its 13th season, with 278 episodes under its belt at the time of writing. SpongeBob has also spawned to spinoff series. Paramount+’s Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years premiered in 2021, with Nickelodeon’s own The Patrick Star Show following suit later that same year.
A Fourth SpongeBob Film Is on the Way
SpongeBob first appeared on the big screen in 2004’s The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, which was directed and co-written by Hillenburg himself. A second film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, was directed by Paul Tibbitt, releasing in theaters in 2015. The 2015 standalone sequel was written by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger from a story by Hillenburg and Tibbit.
The most recent SpongeBob feature was The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, written and directed by Tim Hill from a story by Hill, Aibel and Berger. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the film did not receive a worldwide theatrical release. Rather, Sponge on the Run released in theaters in Canada in 2020 and on Netflix in other markets. The film then received a Paramount+ release in the United States in 2021.
Earlier this year, ViacomCBS (now simply known as Paramount) announced that in addition to a fourth main-series SpongeBob film, it was also developing a trilogy of spinoff films based on the long-running animated series. “As we’ve known with Nickelodeon’s long-standing success, the kids and family audience is incredibly loyal, and we see that on Paramount Plus as well, with kids and family ranking as one of the strongest genres on the service in terms of both engagement and subscriber acquisition,” Brian Robbins — chief content officer, Movies and Kids & Family for Paramount+ — said at the time. “So as they stay for our shows and look for even more of them, we’re doubling down on giving them what they want by expanding the universes of the characters they love the best.”
The fourth SpongeBob SquarePants feature film takes audiences by the hand and leads them to the land on May 23, 2025.
