Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s Namor and Shuri are on opposite sides of a war, but viewers are nonetheless wishing the two could be something more.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever features a bonding moment between the film’s two most important characters, and while there was no romantic kind of interaction, fans’ reaction on social media indicate they wish otherwise.

Letitia Wright’s Shuri, Princess of Wakanda, and Tenoch Huerta’s Namor, King of the undersea nation of Talokan find themselves on opposing sides of a conflict, yet share a moment when Namor seems to nearly convince Shuri the two nations should be allies against the rest of the world. The scene has brought forth several impassioned responses across Twitter and social media, with fans wishing the two had, or still could become, more than reluctant diplomatic partners. Tweets range from fans swooning over the characters’ chemistry to identifying them as soulmates.

Namor and Shuri’s Brief History in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The two nations find themselves at odds over the discovery of the presence of Vibranium beneath Talokan’s underwater lands — a precious metal previously thought to be found only in Wakanda. When Namor learns American college student and tech prodigy Riri Williams has constructed a Vibranium-detecting device that could reveal Talokan’s presence to the world, both Namor and Shuri’s respective forces descend on Riri’s location, with the former looking to capture and kill her, and the latter seeking to protect her.

Both Riri and Shuri end up as Namor’s captives, and during their unwilling stay in Talokan, Namor cites their common royal stature, and offers up a convincing argument for Shuri to join him. Both know the world will stop at nothing to gain possession of their nations’ Vibranium, and only together can they stand against the united global forces. But Namor also threatens to destroy Wakanda should she refuse his offer.

Shuri does indeed refuse and is rescued, along with Riri, by her late brother T’Challa’s former lover Nakia, officially putting the two countries in conflict. Talokan’s resulting attack on Wakanda leaves Shuri’s mother, Queen Ramonda, dead, and subsequently leads to new Black Panther Shuri’s eventual defeat of Namor and surrender of Talokan’s armies. Ultimately, Shuri and Namor agree to a peaceful alliance.

Despite their state of detente, though, Namor doesn’t seem above one day betraying his new allies, and Shuri isn’t likely to forget Namor is directly responsible for her mother’s death.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now playing in theaters.
