Every Hermione Granger Love Interest That Isn’t Ron

  • Share

While predominately a coming-of-age fantasy story, there is still a fair amount of romance within the Harry Potter franchise. One of the central romances happens between Harry’s best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. It took them until the seventh book to make their relationship official, but their mutual feelings were there throughout the series long before their first kiss. While they make a really great couple, Ron is not Hermione’s only choice for a life partner. She is brilliant, brave, and strong-willed, so she’d be a great catch for everyone, but these four guys, in particular, could’ve been great for her as well had things not worked out with Ron.

Viktor Krum Was the First To Notice Hermione Romantically

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was the first installment of the franchise to really break into the angst of teen romance. So it’s fitting that Viktor Krum is introduced in this story. Krum is an international Quidditch star from Bulgaria who competed in the Quidditch World Cup shortly before traveling to Hogwarts with classmates from Durmstrang to compete in the Triwizard Tournament. As one of the school champions, he had his choice of anyone for a partner for the Yule Ball, and he chose Hermione. He appreciated that she didn’t fawn over him and actually cared about who he was outside of his fame. He also admired her passionate nature and her intelligence.

Neville Longbottom Would Have Been a Smart Match for Hermione

Neville Longbottom in Harry Potter.

While they never officially dated or anything that serious in Harry Potter, there was some potential between Hermione and fellow Gryffindor Neville Longbottom. Neville actually asked Hermione to the Yule Ball because he said she was always helpful and nice to him. Unfortunately, he was a little too slow and asked Hermione after she had already agreed to go with Viktor Krum. However, it is interesting to think about what might have happened if Neville had been the first to ask Hermione. Perhaps a date to the Yule Ball between Hermione and Neville could have functioned as the foundation for a supportive relationship. They would have been great together because Neville was smart in his own way, and he also appreciated Hermione’s brilliance. Neville had all the qualities that Hermione was looking for in a partner, like bravery and compassion, and clearly, Neville admired Hermione as well. These two could have been great together, given the chance.

Until Ron and Hermione’s relationship was solidified, many fans clung to the idea that Harry and Hermione would ultimately end up together. This pairing is still one of the most popular fan ships in the Harry Potter fandom long after the epilogue confirmed that they ended up with other people. However, they would’ve made a great couple had things turned out differently. They stuck together through some of the most difficult, trying times in their lives, but they also knew how to have fun and support each other in the less trying times. Friendship can make a really strong foundation for a successful romantic relationship, and Harry and Hermione have a special bond. The films especially emphasized how their relationship had potential beyond the platonic, even though they did ultimately remain just friends.

Percy Weasley Could Have Brought Hermione Into the Family

Harry Potter: What Happened to Percy Weasley?

Okay, so suggesting that Percy Weasley and Hermione Granger would make a great couple seems like a wild, possibly ludicrous suggestion, but there is some potential for this to have happened in Harry Potter. First, they both have an awful lot in common for characters that don’t actually spend that much time together. They are both stubborn and committed to their convictions, and sometimes those traits work to alienate them from those they love. Hermione fell into life with the Weasleys with joy and ease from her very first visit, and she was one of the few people, either in the family or out, who got along with Percy with relative ease. There was a risk that Ron wasn’t going to survive the series, and had that been case, Percy could have been the next Weasley in line for Hermione’s affection.
