The Holiday Special was the first Marvel Studios project ever conceived for Disney+ and finally premiered on the service in November. Pratt, who described the project as a “fantastic story vomited from the brain of a mad genius,” reprises his role as Peter Quill/Star-Lord. The special follows Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) as they travel to Earth to obtain the perfect Christmas present for Peter: Kevin Bacon. The special also features an appearance from The Old 97’s. Band members Rhett Miller, Murry Hammond, Ken Bethea and Philip Peeples were transformed into an alien rock band with costumes and prosthetics.

The Holiday Special featured an original song co-written by James Gunn and Miller, “I Don’t Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime Is Here)” along with another song performed by Bacon. “I love to sing, I love to play, James sent me that song and I thought it was a really cool song,” Bacon said. “It’s very hard to come up with a new idea for a Christmas song but The Old ’97s cut this really cool Christmas song and I got to sing it with them, they’re actually in the band in alien make-up, so I had nothing but fun.”

Gunn, who wrote and directed the special, previously described the project as “the greatest thing [he’s] ever done.” He said, “It’s totally ridiculous, and every day we can’t believe that we’re making it. We all completely love it,” he said. “It is unlike anything that anyone’s ever seen before. I can’t wait for people to see it.” The director also confirmed that the events of the special would lead directly into Vol. 3 and should be considered essential viewing for audiences.

Along with Cosmo the Spacedog, The Holiday Special stars Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Klementieff as Mantis and Karen Gillan as Nebula. The cast will reprise their roles for Vol. 3, which will mark the final iteration of this version of the team. “It’s not ever going to be the same group of characters for a lot of different reasons,” Gunn said. “Who knows what will happen with the Guardians franchise in regards to future characters, but in terms of this group of characters, this is the end of their story.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2023. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is available to stream on Disney+.
