Hideo Kojima has hinted at the possibility of a future Death Stranding 2 announcement.

As reported by Gamer Watch, Kojima tweeted a mysterious image of the three company logos from Death Stranding along with the caption, “Start a new journey.” The Japanese video game designer’s enigmatic post caused some to believe a Death Stranding 2 announcement may arrive during 2022’s the Game Awards on Dec. 8. Geoff Keighley, the presenter of the Game Awards, also responded with a GIF of a seal contemplating Kojima’s initial tweet with the caption “hmmm, very interesting.”

While the announcement of Death Stranding 2 may not occur at 2022’s Game Awards, other titles may unveil release dates or even begin pre-orders during the same time. For example, some Final Fantasy fans believe pre-orders for the sixteenth main entry in the Square Enix franchise may begin during the anticipated ceremony. Additionally, another trailer for Final Fantasy XVI could also release alongside the alleged pre-order announcement.

On Oct. 4, some assumed a Death Stranding 2 update could imminently arrive following Kojima Productions’ teaser at Tokyo Game Show 2022. The company’s merchandise booth featured scannable QR codes with another mysterious element. This time, an image of a female silhouette with the words, “Who Am I?” Kojima later confirmed Maleficent‘s Elle Fanning would star in Death Stranding 2, her first video game credit. While the Death Stranding director revealed Fanning’s identity, some believe Kojima has kept two cast members a secret. Later, Kojima Productions confirmed actor Shioli Kutsuna will also appear in the mysterious game.

Aside from Fanning, The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus will return for Death Stranding 2. In May 2022, Reedus confirmed the development of Kojima’s sequel. The actor previously did the motion capture and voice-acting work for the first game’s protagonist, Sam Porter Bridges. Other cast members in Death Stranding include Mads Mikkelsen, Lea Seydoux, Margaret Qualley and Guillermo Del Toro. Troy Baker, Tommie Earl Jenkins, Lindsay Wagner and Nicolas Winding Refn also appear.

Released in 2019, Death Stranding is a post-apocalyptic title and Kojima’s first game following his split from Konami in 2015. Players control a porter named Sam, who delivers supplies to remote areas, connecting them to a wireless communications network in the process. As of July 2021, Death Stranding had sold over five million copies worldwide. In September 2021, the open-world game received a director’s cut version for the PlayStation 5, which later released for Windows in March 2022.

Death Stranding is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. There is yet to be a determined release date for Death Stranding 2.
