The following contains spoilers for Avengers Assemble Alpha #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Thor confronts the prehistoric version of his father about his mother being the Phoenix Force in Avengers Assemble Alpha #1.
Avengers Assemble Alpha #1 comes from Jason Aaron, Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, Alex Sinclair and VC’s Cory Petit. In the issue, the Avengers of Earth-616 travel their time and meet the prehistoric Avengers of 1,000,000 B.C. While the effort was done in order to defeat Mephisto, who is also traveling through time in an effort to rewrite history, the two teams of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes quickly butt heads and take to fighting one another when Agamatto, the first Sorcerer Supreme, suddenly bursts into flames.
Odin, who is part of the Avengers of 1,000,000 B.C., quickly blames Maya Lopez, who became the Phoenix in 2021’s Avengers #44 (by Aaron, Javier Garrón, David Curiel and Petit). “Look at the flames that assail [Agamatto]!” Odin bellows. “We all know what sort of duplicitous witches command such fire! And there one stands! These Avengers have a Phoenix in their midst!” Thor quickly fires back, “Never mind our Phoenix. Where is yours, All-Father Odin?! What have you done with my mother?!” Odin is clearly confused by the comment, as he replies, “Mother?!”
Is the Phoenix Really Thor’s Mother?
In 2021’s Avengers #42 (by Aaron, Luca Maresca, Curiel and Petit), Thor is told that his true mother is actually the Phoenix rather than Gaea. 2022’s Avengers 1,000,000 BC (2022) #1 (by Aaron, Kev Walker, Dean White and Petit) confirms that, while Gaea and Odin are Thor’s biological parents, Phoenix has also long played a role in the God of Thunder’s life and she considers herself to be a mother to the boy. The one-shot revealed Odin once had a romantic relationship with a woman named Firehair, who was also the first human host of the Phoenix Force. Firehair began calling herself Lady Phoenix and went on to form the Avengers 1,000,000 B.C. in an effort to protect the planet. Odin eventually decided to try to marry Lady Phoenix; however, she refused the offer, which then caused a rift in the team. Years later, Lady Phoenix convinces Gae to marry and have a child, Thor, with Odin. Thor is killed by Frost Giants just moments after being born, but he’s brought back to life when Lady Phoenix swoops him up and breathes fire into his lungs.
