Glass Onion Toasts the New Year With Posters for Each Suspect’s Drink

A new set of posters for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery ties into one of the whodunit’s hints by featuring each suspect’s preferred beverage.

A new set of posters for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery gets festive — if ominous — by handing out a drink to each of the film’s main characters.

The images were posted on the official Knives Out Twitter at the very end of 2022 with a caption advising, “Choose wisely.” The text on each one of the posters reinforces the caution by asking, “What’s your poison?” As the phrase is commonly used to reference someone’s favorite drink, it matches the theme of the images, but it also hints at the murder in the movie and how it was immediately suspected to involve a poison drink.

There are eight posters in all, seven of which show two hands reaching toward each other in a pose evoking Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam,” part of the Sistine Chapel’s historic ceiling, except that there’s a drink between them. That the images reference a classic work of art by a Great Master may be another subtle reference to the film, which uses Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa in its plot and symbolism.

Although no faces or backgrounds are included in the Glass Onion posters, the characters are named along with the actors who portrayed them, and their first names are written on their cups or glasses. They vary from Birdie’s tropical mixed drink to Peg’s disposable red plastic cup, and Daniel Craig’s famed detective Benoit Blanc is shown receiving an espresso cup rather than an alcoholic beverage. The final poster is for Edward Norton’s Miles, host of the island murder mystery party that sets the stage, and since he’s been the owner of the second hand that appears in each poster, he’s the only one who is alone in his image, raising the glass with his name on it.

Glass Onion follows the events of the original Knives Out, but it serves as a standalone story and does not contain any connections to the previous film. The new movie, directed again by Rian Johnson, has a star-studded cast which in addition to Craig and Norton includes Janelle MonĂ¡e, Dave Bautista, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Madelyn Cline and Jessica Henwick. On top of that, the film features cameo appearances from the likes of Hugh Grant, who debuted as Benoit Blanc’s romantic partner, and the late Stephen Sondheim and Angela Lansbury.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is available to stream now on Netflix.
