Isshin Kurosaki and Masaki Kurosaki are the parents of Bleach’s protagonist, Ichigo Kurosaki. The Thousand-Year Blood War arc showed how Ichigo’s parents met, and many fans were instantly able to see the chemistry between them. Isshin and Masaki’s romance was developed through a few chapters of them interacting, showing how the two shared similarities in their personalities and ideals.
The sweetest moments are when Isshin talks to Ichigo about her. His words alone showed just how strong their relationship was. Although not much is seen of the pair’s married life, their relationship is one of the best romances written in Bleach.
10/10 Isshin Cherished The Compliment Masaki Gave Him
Even nearly a decade after Masaki’s death, Isshin remembered the one compliment she gave him on his appearance when they first started dating. She told him that he looked cool holding a cigarette, which led to him doing it more.
When Ichigo saw him smoking at Masaki’s grave, he was surprised, saying that he thought Isshin had quit. However, Isshin said that he only smoked it in front of her grave, which is his way of trying to look cool in front of her and showing he still cares about what she said years ago.
9/10 Both Leap In To Help Others Without Hesitation
Both Isshin and Masaki are the type who quickly leap into action to save other people. Despite being told by Ryuken that Quincy should always wait for the Shinigami to die before engaging with a Hollow, Masaki went anyway since she knew she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself if she let someone die.
Isshin was so moved by her bravery and selflessness that he didn’t hesitate to give up his powers in order to save her from hollowfication. He had regrets about what he was giving up, but knew he would regret it more if he let someone like Masaki die after she saved his life.
8/10 There Is An Unspoken Understanding Between The Two
Isshin lied about the reason why he lost his Shinigami powers, but Masaki was able to see right through him. Isshin admitted that she had the ability to see through any of his lies and forgive them. Isshin shared a similar understanding of Masaki, seeing the worry on her face when she admitted she was a Quincy and quickly reassuring her.
Masaki and Ichigo are a lot alike, as both of them have a tendency to wear a bright smile to reassure people when they are actually feeling down. They need someone who is able to see through this and offer the support that they need.
7/10 Isshin Is The First Person Who Truly Made Masaki Feel Welcomed
After losing her parents and becoming the last member of the Kurosaki family, Masaki was adopted into the Ishida family. From the start, she knew that she was only taken in so that she would marry Ryuken and keep the Quincy bloodline pure. Masaki was miserable in the household, as she was often criticized and scolded by her aunt, Izumi.
Although Ryuken tried his best to come to Masaki’s defense, Masaki hid her pain behind a smile and cried when she was alone since she knew Izumi never saw her as a person, but only as a means to an end. Given the conflicts between the Shinigami and the Quincy, Masaki was afraid to introduce herself to Isshin. She expected him to react negatively, but instead, he made her feel like she was finally seen and accepted for who she was.
6/10 Masaki Motivated Isshin To Work Harder
When Isshin was the Captain of the 10th Division of the Gotei 13, he would go out of his way to avoid working. This made his vice captain, Rangiku Matsumoto, furious since she had an increased workload if Isshin didn’t do his job. Isshin appeared lax when it came to paperwork, but more motivated at any sign of danger.
Isshin’s lazy qualities vanished with he lived in the human world with Masaki. In order to make a living for himself, he used his medicinal knowledge to run a clinic. As a doctor, he takes his job seriously, as seen when he is seen treating Chad at the beginning of the series.
5/10 Isshin Never Missed His Powers
When Isshin regained his powers, Urahara asked him how it felt to return to his Shinigami form. Isshin just called the experience “so-so.” This showed that being a Shinigami was never what Isshin cared about the most, and his years with Masaki were far more precious than having his powers.
Isshin didn’t even blame the Grand Fisher for killing her, or Ichigo, instead cursing the fact that he hadn’t been strong enough to protect her himself. The powers were only considered a tool that he wished he had in order to protect others, but the powers never held any value on their own.
4/10 Isshin Saw Masaki As The Sun
Masaki was considered the center of her family by both Isshin and Ichigo. Although fans didn’t see much of Isshin and Masaki’s married life, they were able to see how much Isshin cared about Masaki by the way he talked about her. He compared her to the sun, someone who shone so brightly and drew him in without even trying.
Masaki was a loving wife and mother, and the family’s whole world seemed to revolve around her. This was why every member of the family struggled to cope with her death. Isshin did his best to be a supportive father and keep her memory alive, even putting up outrageously large posters of her face in the house.
3/10 Isshin Was Proud Of Masaki’s Sacrifice
Isshin was devastated by Masaki’s death, but he was able to view her actions with a level head. He stated that he loved Masaki because she was the type of woman who would die protecting her son.
Although Isshin usually takes a hands-off approach in parenting when Ichigo is a teenager, he always gives Ichigo the advice that he needs and support during critical moments in the series. He told Ichigo that his goal is to make sure Ichigo lived a long life; otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to face Masaki.
2/10 Masaki Actually Made Isshin Flustered
Although Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War’s anime cut out Isshin’s inappropriate comments toward Rangiku, Isshin was actually a perverted individual. However, this quality of his vanished in front of Masaki. When saving her from hollowfication, despite her state of undress, he didn’t say anything untoward to her.
In fact, Isshin actually got flustered and blushed when Masaki seemed overjoyed to see him, and she completely ignored the elephant in the room as she cheerily asked for his name. Masaki actually found his reaction funny and was laughing about it before she even woke up.
1/10 Isshin Respected Masaki’s Strength
Isshin respected Masaki’s strength, both physically and mentally. Isshin, who hadn’t trusted Rangiku or Toshiro Hitsugaya to help him against the unknown threat, was saved by Masaki, who was just a schoolgirl at the time. Masaki proved herself by luring White in, then defeating the Hollow in a single blow.
Isshin was so impressed that he couldn’t stop thinking about her even after he returned to the Soul Society, and he went back to the human world just to see her again. After losing his powers and marrying Masaki, he didn’t criticize her strength the way that her aunt did and trusted her to be able to handle Hollows on her own.
