Inside Out star Mindy Kaling confirms she will not reprise her role as Disgust in the 2015 Pixar film’s upcoming sequel.
Inside Out star Mindy Kaling won’t be returning for the animated Pixar film’s upcoming sequel.
In an interview with TheWrap, Kaling revealed she wouldn’t reprise her voice-acting role as Disgust in Inside Out 2. “I had a great time working on Inside Out and am sure Inside Out 2 will be great. But I’m not working on it,” she said. Kaling stressed she isn’t part of the sequel “right now,” but it’s unclear if The Office actor will ever join the cast. While Parks and Recreation‘s Amy Poehler already signed on to voice Joy again, it’s still undetermined if Phyllis Smith, Bill Hader or Lewis Black will return for Inside Out 2.
Released in 2015, Inside Out centers on a young girl named Riley who moves from Minnesota to San Francisco, California. Following the dramatic life change, Riley experiences various emotions to cope with her hardships. However, disaster ensues when Joy, Sadness and the core memories exit the Headquarters. Furthermore, Riley’s personality islands fall into the “Memory Dump.” The two emotions must work with Bing Bong, Riley’s imaginary friend, to find their way back to Fear, Anger and Disgust and cheer up the 12-year-old.
Announced at the D23 Expo in 2022, Inside Out 2 will focus on Riley’s life as a teenager and introduce more emotions than the five previous ones of Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust. The Good Dinosaur‘s Kelsey Mann will replace Pete Docter as the sequel’s director. Additionally, Toy Story 4‘s Mark Nielsen will produce. Inside Out 2 marks the eighth sequel Pixar has completed, with Toy Story follow-up films being the earliest and most recent entries.
In addition to Inside Out 2, Pixar also offered D23 audience members a first look at Elemental. Starring Jurassic World Dominion‘s Mamoudou Athie and The Half of It‘s Leah Lewis, Elemental follows elemental beings Ember and Wade, who live in Element City alongside fire, water, land and air residents. On Nov. 17, Disney shared the upcoming film’s first teaser trailer featuring the fire-and-ice personalities of Ember and Wade.
Peter Sohn, the director behind Elemental, revealed that his childhood in New York inspired the movie. “The idea [for Elemental] started with my parents. As immigrants to the U.S. from Korea in the ’70s, they had no family, nothing. But they managed to create a life here in New York,” he explained. “And just like them, many people have left their people and families to a new land, with hopes and dreams, all mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and neighborhoods.”
Elemental is scheduled to open in theaters on June 16, 2023. Inside Out 2 opens in theaters on June 14, 2024.
