A Star Wars Deleted Scene Revealed Dooku Killed Anakin’s Mother

While Palpatine is the mastermind behind everything in the Star Wars prequels, a deleted scene reveals Count Dooku’s involvement in Anakin’s downfall.

Palpatine was the puppet master behind everything during the Star Wars prequel trilogy, with his apprentice Count Dooku clearly being a pawn for his plans. While Dooku is a villain, he’s always come across as more level-headed and understanding than other Sith, with a twisted belief that what he is doing is right. However, a deleted scene from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith reveals that Dooku had a sinister part to play in Anakin’s fall to the dark side.

Anakin’s fall was a slow and methodical process for Palpatine, who had the patience to wait over ten years for his future apprentice to become Darth Vader. And it’s always assumed that Dooku had no idea of this plan, especially since the Sith rule of two would dictate that he be replaced. Yet in the deleted scene, Dooku makes the bold claim that he killed Anakin’s mother, Shmi, which was a huge moment in Anakin’s downfall.

Dooku Colluded With Tusken Raiders

Anakin Skywalker in Attack of the Clones

During Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Anakin discovers his mother had been sent to the Lars Homestead from A New Hope. From there, her new husband claims Tusken Raiders kidnapped her and that she’s likely gone. But Anakin, being the stubborn Jedi he was, gets on his speeder bike and tracks her down, finding Shmi bound in the Tusken camp and barely holding onto life. She says her final goodbyes and passes away, marking a key point in Anakin’s downfall as he goes on to slaughter the entire camp.

While Palpatine was monitoring Anakin’s downfall, this event always seemed like an unfortunate circumstance that happened by chance. But the deleted scene in Revenge of the Sith suggests it was Palpatine’s plan all along. During Anakin’s fight with Dooku, Palpatine was supposed to say, “Anakin, he was bragging earlier about how he arranged to have your mother killed by the Tusken Raiders,” which Dooku confirmed before continuing the fight.

Palpatine’s Elaborate Plan To Turn Anakin

Count Dooku is about to die

This scene was revealed in the 2005 book The Making of Star Wars Revenge of the Sith, although it doesn’t mention why it was cut. Deleted scenes are always a tricky subject when it comes to canon, but at the very least, it raises important questions surrounding Dooku’s involvement in Anakin’s turn to the dark side.

If what Dooku claims is true, then he must’ve had some idea surrounding Palpatine’s plan to turn Anakin; and if this is the case, then it seems strange that Dooku was never concerned about Anakin replacing him as his apprentice. Although, of course, it’s possible that it was just another lie by Palpatine to manipulate Anakin during a vulnerable moment. He could’ve easily told Dooku to support his lie to make Anakin lose focus, and Dooku would’ve accepted the idea without giving it a second thought.

There are arguments to be made on both sides regarding whether Dooku was telling the truth. But either way, it’s interesting to see cut dialogue from Star Wars that involves Dooku in Anakin’s downfall. Neither he nor Anakin knew they were being completely played by Palpatine at that moment, and it goes to show what a master manipulator he really was.
