A Lovecraftian spin on Batman was one of DC’s best Elseworlds stories, and will be receiving an animated adaptation in 2023.

In 2022, DC animation announced that they would be adapting one of the most iconic Elseworlds books of all time: The Doom That Came To Gotham. The story successfully combined the Golden Age aesthetics and tone of Batman with the cosmic terror of Lovecraftian monsters.

DC’s Elseworlds line of comics were known for their alternate takes on the DCU and its characters. Popular stories such as Red Son, Kingdom Come and Gotham By Gaslight were notable stories that achieved critical acclaim and lasting relevance. However, many of these alternative stories flew completely under the radar with fans as the years went on. The Doom That Came To Gotham was one of the most notable a story set in the bygone era of pulp that used ancient monsters as the threat. Now, the story is set for an animated movie. And it is certain to remind fans that the Elseworlds line is particularly well suited to adaptations across various mediums.

How A Golden Age Batman Met The Cosmic Terror

Batman The Doom That Came To Gotham

The Doom That Came To Gotham (by Mike Mignola, Richard Price, Troy Nixey, and Bill Oakley) follows a Batman set in the Victorian era, where he travels to the Arctic on an expedition. While there, Lovecraftian monsters are unleashed and follow the Dark Knight back to the older style Gotham City. With his city under siege, Batman battled the monsters to save his people from an existential horror. Ra’s Al Ghul, reimagined as a cult leader in this universe, attempted to release Iog-Sotha — a powerful Elder God.

The older setting along with the horror tone of the monsters promise for a truly unique Batman animated project. Throughout his artistic career, Mike Mignola’s fascination with Lovecraftian themes acquired a strong and devoted fan following, so translating it into animation has a ready made audience. While other Elseworlds books were often confined to a single graphic novel format, the three issue format allowed for additional context and narrative depth.

The Doom That Came To Gotham’s forthcoming adaptation will bring many tried and true genre comic book elements to the world of animation. In fact, these kinds of Elseworlds tales are particularly better suited to animation than live action for example. The Doom That Came To Gotham has a contained nature and dynamic events that would not work as well in any other format. The story’s stylized art will only add to the unique visual aesthetic of the animated film and highlight the world building of the original creative team.

Elseworlds stories and their genre-bending nature make for some of the most interesting stories but often are dismissed by a large segment of devoted comic book readers. Much like Marvel’s What If? stories, their removal from regular DC canon can make fans, especially newcomers, question whether they are worthy of a read. The Doom That Came To Gotham stands as a testament to the value and longevity of Elseworlds stories.

The Doom That Came To Gotham remains one of Elseworld’s hidden gems and is worthy of renewed attention because of the upcoming film adaptation. The book will appeal to fans of horror, especially of the Lovecraftian style. The miniseries is about to be reprinted alongside the release of the animated movie. As far as alternate versions of the DC Universe, this is one of the best possible choices for adaptation.
