Top Gun: Maverick’s Monica Barbaro falls for a hotel manager behind the scenes of a superhero movie in the first trailer for Paramount+’s At Midnight.

Monica Barbaro is trading in her G-suit for Captain Marvel-esque tights in Paramount+’s At Midnight, a romantic comedy set behind-the-scenes of a superhero movie.

In the streamer’s new original feature, Barbaro plays Sophie Wilder, star of the popular Superhero Society film series. After she discovers that her co-star and boyfriend, Adam Clark (Workaholics‘ Anders Holm), is cheating on her, Sophie sparks a romance with Alejandro (Father of the Bride‘s Diego Boneta), the junior manager of the hotel she is staying at while shooting Super Society 3. However, as production on the sequel comes to an end, and with Adam wanting to repair their relationship, Sophie’s promising new romance with Alejandro seems destined for an abrupt ending.

Barbaro is riding high off the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, in which she plays Lt. Natasha ‘Phoenix’ Trace. In addition to rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, Maverick was a box office juggernaut, earning nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest grossing film of 2022. Avatar: The Way of Water recently surpassed the Tom Cruise vehicle as the most financially successful film released last year. James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel has earned $1.73 billion globally, making it the seventh-highest grossing film ever at the time of writing this article.

Paramount’s Superhero History

Along with 2022’s Secret Headquarters, At Midnight is a return of sorts to the superhero genre for Paramount Pictures. The studio was previously the distributor of four of Marvel Studios’ first five entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. The studio formerly owned the distribution rights to The Avengers and Iron Man 3 as well but sold these to Walt Disney Pictures in 2010.

At Midnight is directed by Jonah Feingold (Dating & New York) from a script he co-wrote with Maria Hinojos (Cindy la Regia) and Giovanni M. Porta. The film also stars Whitney Cummings (Good Mourning), Casey Thomas Brown (Father of the Bride), Catherine Cohen (Catherine Cohen: The Twist…? She’s Gorgeous), Fernando Carsa (Acapulco) and Maya Zapata (Selena’s Secret). Producers on the film include Fred Berger (La La Land), David Bernon (Hearts Beat Loud), Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Loving), Eréndira Núñez Larios (Sundown), Josh Glick and star Diego Boneta.

The film will be part of Paramount+’s month-long Valentine’s Day collection that will also include the likes of The Lost City, Grease, Almost Famous and The In-Between.

At Midnight hits Paramount+ on Feb. 10.
