The Doctor Who Twitter account announces UNIT boss Kate Lethbridge-Stewart’s return and new character Roger ap Gwilliam’s debut in Season 14.
Doctor Who just revealed that UNIT is set to return in Season 14 alongside a mysterious new character, Roger ap Gwilliam.
The announcement comes via the long-running BBC sci-fi series’ official Twitter account. It confirms that Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor will encounter the Unified Intelligence Taskforce and its leader, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, as well as Gwilliam, about whom little is known at this stage. Jemma Redgrave is set to reprise the Lethbridge-Stewart role, while Aneurin Barnard will portray Gwilliam.
Fans will have to wait until 2024 for Doctor Who Season 14’s arrival, as it will be preceded by three specials slated for release in late 2023. These specials will be headlined by David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor and will celebrate the franchise’s 60th anniversary. Tennant previously portrayed the Tenth Doctor, and the recently released trailer for the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials teases the unexplained circumstances of his comeback. The trailer also hypes the Doctor’s reunion with former companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) and includes a brief appearance by the Fifteenth Doctor, as well.
Rose Tyler Actor Talks Doctor Who Return
Tennant and Tate’s return to Doctor Who has sparked speculation that other fan-favorite former cast members could return to the franchise in the future, too. This includes another of the Tenth Doctor’s companions, Rose Tyler, who was last seen as the avatar adopted by a sentient weapon in 2013 special “The Day of the Doctor.” Rose actor Billie Piper recently expressed interest in playing the part again, on one condition. “If it was shot in London — sorry that’s a really loveless answer!” Piper said. “There’s a running theme here, I don’t want to work much. [If] it was like four episodes all shot in London, then yeah, I’d be like a rat-up-a-drainpipe for that.”
In the same interview, Piper also discussed the one Rose-centric Doctor Who plotline she would like to change. The English actor said she would alter the finale of Doctor Who Season 4, Episode 13, “Journey’s End,” so that Rose didn’t end up with a half-human copy of the Tenth Doctor. “[I would change] the Doctor Who ending where I go off with the second Doctor instead of the real Doctor to the parallel universe,” she said. “It’s not a criticism of [showrunner] Russell T Davies, because he is the master, but I struggled with that. Mainly because the second Doctor is less good than the real one!”
Doctor Who Season 14 will premiere on Disney+ in 2024.
