“Fan casting” is a timeless pastime in any fandom, whether it’s books, animes, comics, or video games. Fan casting is the art of suggesting actors that can best suit the roles of characters, in terms of looks and personality, in the event a live-action adaptation is made. Even if a live-action adaptation is made, rarely does its casting honor the wishes of those fans. That doesn’t mean fans will be disappointed with the results.

The cast of HBO’s The Last of Us wasn’t what The Last of Us fans expected, but all it took was one trailer for fans to grow attached to Joel and Ellie all over again. HBO’s The Last of Us has received high marks from critics, easily making it one of the best video game adaptations ever made.

10/10 Joel Is Played By None Other Than The Mandalorian Himself

Pedro Pascal

Players step into Joel’s worn, broken-down boots for The Last of Us. Fans have grown incredibly attached to Joel, from his tragic introduction to this grim world to his journey across the country with Ellie.

Joel is played by Pedro Pascal. Pascal has amassed an impressive collection of credits in recent years. Viewers may quickly recognize him from his role as Prince Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones. Recently, viewers have grown accustomed to his voice as the titular character in Star Wars The Mandalorian. Pascal has also had noteworthy roles, such as Javier Peña in Narcos and Maxwell Lord in Wonder Woman 1984.

9/10 Ellie Brings Game Of Thrones To The Last Of US

Bella Ramsey

Ellie in The Last of Us: Part I and Bella Ramsey as Ellie in HBO's The Last of Us

While Joel may be the character players spend most of The Last of Us playing as Ellie is at the center of its narrative. Ellie, for unknown reasons, is immune to the cordyceps fungus. Joel is tasked to take Ellie to a Firefly lab, so they can potentially produce a cure.

Ellie is played by Bella Ramsey. Ramsey made a fantastic first impression on viewers in her role as Lady Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, the young and fearless head of House Mormont who is wise beyond her years. Ramsey also voices the titular character in Netflix’s Hilda, based on the graphic novel of the same name.

8/10 Sarah Is An Up-And-Coming Star

Nico Parker

Sarah handing Joel a gift in The Last of Us: Part I and Nico Parker as Sarah in HBO's The Last of Us

When players begin their playthrough of The Last of Us, they don’t initially play as Joel. They play as his daughter, Sarah. Sarah serves as the innocent eyes players gaze through into a world that is quickly falling apart. While her time in The Last of Us is short, Sarah makes a long-lasting impression on players.

Sarah is played by Nico Parker. Despite her young age, Parker already has a major credit to her name. Parker played Milly Farrier in Disney’s live-action remake of the classic animated film Dumbo. Parker also had roles in the 2021 film Reminiscence and the drama series The Third Day.

7/10 Tommy Will Be Played By Marvel Alum

Gabriel Luna

Tommy in The Last of Us: Part I and Gabriel Luna as a gun-wielding Tommy in HBO's The Last of Us

Tommy is the brother of Joel. While the two brothers stuck together during the beginning of the unique and widespread outbreak, they would eventually grow estranged due to combative ideologies. By the time Joel meets Ellie, Tommy is hundreds of miles away.

Tommy is played by Gabriel Luna. Luna is perhaps best known for playing Robbie Reyes, or Ghost Rider, in ten episodes of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Luna is also notable for the role of Rev-9 in Terminator: Dark Fate, the primary antagonist built to go back in time to kill Dani Ramos.

Anna Torv

Tess is played by Anna Torv. Torv is best known for her lead role as Olivia Dunham in the Fox series Fringe. PlayStation players may recognize Torv’s voice as she was the voice of Nariko in Heavenly Sword in both the game, where she motion captured the character, and the 2014 film.

5/10 Marlene Is Played By Someone Who Knows The Role Well

Merle Dandridge

Marlene in The Last Of Us: PArt I and Merle Dandridge as Marlene in HBO's The Last of Us

Marlene is the leader of the Fireflies and the guardian of Ellie. Marlene had a close friendship with Ellie’s mother, who requested that Marlene watch over Ellie after her passing. With the Fireflies struggling to stay afloat, Marlene desperately asks Joel and Tess to “smuggle” Ellie to a Firefly lab across the country.

Marlene is played by Merle Dandridge. Dandridge did the voice work and motion capture for Marlene in the video game version of The Last of Us, the only instance of a role reprisal. Of course, there are numerous cameo appearances throughout HBO’s The Last of Us that fans should keep an eye out for.

4/10 Bill Is Played By None Other Than Ron Swanson

Nick Offerman

Bill in The Last of Us: Part I and Nick Offerman as Bill in HBO's The Last of Us

Joel and Tess have worked with numerous people during their smuggling careers. One of those characters is Bill, a loner who has an entire town blocked off from the Infected. Early in their journey, Joel and Ellie seek Bill’s help to obtain a vehicle.

Bill is played by Nick Offerman. Outside of Pedro Pascal, Offerman is the most recognizable name on HBO’s The Last of Us’ cast list. Offerman is best known for his role as Ron Swanson in Parks and Recreation. Offerman has starred in productions such as The LEGO Movie, Axe Cop, Fargo, and Making It.

3/10 Henry Will Be Played By A Canadian Teen Drama Star

Lamar Johnson

Henry in The Last of Us: Part I and Lamar Johnson as Henry in HBO's The Last of Us

In the video game version, Henry is one of the few friendly characters Joel and Ellie meet during their time in Pittsburgh. Henry was born a few years prior to the outbreak and has few memories of the past world. Henry is accompanied by his younger brother, Sam, who he is very protective of.

Henry is played by Lamar Johnson. Johnson’s most prominent role was in the Canadian teen drama The Next Step as the character West. Johnson also played the mutant Match in Marvel’s Dark Phoenix and Seven Carter in The Hate U Give.

2/10 Sam Is Played By A Relative Newcomer

Keivonn Woodard

Sam in The Last of Us: Part I and Keivonn Woodard as Sam in HBO's The Last of Us

Sam is the younger brother of Henry. Born after the outbreak, like Ellie, Sam just wants to be an average child. Sam trusts and looks up to his brother, but is resourceful and bold in his own way. Sam quickly formed a bond with Ellie, who provided him with a much-needed friend of a similar age.

Sam is played by Keivonn Woodard. Woodard doesn’t have many credits to date, but don’t be surprised to see Sam be a breakout role for the young actor. Woodard is deaf, which is how Sam will be portrayed, unlike his video game counterpart. It was already reasonable for Henry to be protective of his brother, but Sam’s lack of hearing will add a fascinating layer to their relationship.

1/10 David Will Be Played By A Solid Character Actor

Scott Shepherd
