DC fans are celebrating a moment in Nightwing #100 where Dick Grayson refers to Bruce Wayne/Batman as “dad.”
Near the end of Nightwing #100, Dick and Bruce are standing around Alfred Pennyworth’s gravestone shortly after Wonder Woman and Superman told the first Boy Wonder they want him to guard the planet now that the Justice League is on hiatus following the events of Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths. Eager to accept the offer but not wanting to abandon the city of Blüdhaven, Nightwing turns to Bruce for advice on how to proceed.
The two begin chatting about what Alfred, who was killed by Bane in 2019’s Batman #77, would say if he was there in the moment. “Alfred would have told you that I am inspired by you,” Bruce tells Dick. “He would have told you that I am so proud my son has grown to be the best of us. I’m sorry if you’ve ever thought differently. I’m sorry if I failed you.” While Bruce continues to apologize, Dick cuts him off with a hug and tells him he’s grateful for how Bruce put his life on hold to adopt a kid who “lost everything.” Bruce tells Dick he’ll be around to help however he can, at which point Dick gives him another hug and says, “I love you, dad.”
